This is a GIS vector GeoPackage (.gpkg) of the Friends of the Earth / Terra Sulis Tree Canopy Map of England, derived from Environment Agency's National LiDAR Programme. The file covers a 25 km by 25 km super-tile. The file has been compressed into a .zip file for download, so you will need to unzip it before use. See the specifications for how the tile name relates to the Ordnance Survey 100 km tile codes. You can see a continuous interactive tree canopy map of England, of which this tile is a part, on the Friends of the Earth web site https://friendsoftheearth.uk/trees
This file contains a GIS vector file of the FoE / Terra Sulis tree canopy map of England. The map is derived from LiDAR data collected by the Environment Agency, available under the Open Government Licence (OGL). The tree canopy map was generated using an algorithm developed by Terra Sulis. Trees and hedges shorter than about 4 metres are excluded. The temporal currency of the data varies between 2016 and 2022. The original EA data are in five thousand five hundred raster tiles, each 5 km x 5 km in size. In our tree canopy map these tiles have been merged together into 25km by 25km super-tiles and the tile boundaries dissolved to form continuous polygons within each super-tiles. There are 274 super-tiles, so there are 274 GeoPackage files available. The super-tile names are of the form: tq_tile_set_25k_007x.gpkg. In this example:• ’tq’ refers to the Ordnance Survey 100 km tile in which the super-tile occurs, see below• ‘tile_set_25k’ indicates this is a 25km super-tile• ‘007’ indicates that this is super-tile 7 of the 16 super-tiles within the OS 100km tile. At the time of processing there remained some areas with no LiDAR data, these were filled with data from the National Forest Inventory. Some false-positives and false-negatives do occur in the data. Please refer to the blog posts for further details. All source data is available under the Open Government licence v3.0 unless otherwise stated ©Crown Copyright 2022.
